biography

    Lydia Joyce Deetz was born on October 1, 1976 to Charles and Emily Deetz in New York City. As a young child she was quite bright, already showing her interest in the macabre by watching her first horror film, Poltergeist at age three, and stating her favorite animal as the bat. Lydia also already began demonstrating her ability to see spirits, inheriting the ability from her mother. She lived happily with both her parents as her dad worked in a high profile real-estate office and her mother was a photographer. However, her happy childhood did not last long, for when Lydia was just five years old, her mother died in a horrific car crash returning home from a night out with friends, causing her father to have numerous anxious breakdowns throughout the next few years.

     When Lydia was ten years old, her father remarried to a woman named Delia, a very bright woman whom was a huge mother figure in her life. Already a sad, lonely outcast at the age of twelve, this only got worse following her father’s most recent anxious breakdown, resulting in their move to Peaceful Pines, Connecticut. [CANON DIVERGENCE BEGINS] They bought their house not soon after the couple who had lived there had died in a car accident, Barbara and Adam Maitland. They “haunted” the house, and became a second pair of parent-like figures to her. Lydia then began school at Miss Shannon’s School for Girls, though she wasn’t able to make friends easily.

      Despite having the increased support from another set of parents, Lydia’s mental health still suffered from being often ostracized by her peers due to her interests. Looking for someone else to relate to, she began to have a growing interest in the background of her deceased mother going through old boxes that Lydia was able to save from their move. Discovering her mother’s wiccan background, she began to work on creating her own connection to the part of herself that she never knew existed, despite it being able to explain her ability to communicate with the dead. She began to save her allowance money to work on purchasing more paranormal books, as well as Wiccan ones.

      After saving enough, she ended up purchasing a book about exorcisms, demons, and opening the portal to life after death in hopes to be able to gain communication with her dead mother. However, instead of opening a portal to whatever worldly plain her mother ended up on, she accidentally created a portal in her bedroom mirror to the Neitherworld. This also led to the accidental summoning of the Poltergeist Beetlejuice in an effort to control the portal, and although tentative about his motives at first, she finally felt like she found a friend that understood her [CANON DIVERGENCE ENDS]. Her and Beetlejuice ended up becoming best friends, and almost immediately began going on crazy adventures into his home, the Neitherworld, and she no longer felt as alone as she once did. She even made friends in Beetlejuice’s realm—Doomie, Ginger, and Jacque, and in her realm; Prudence and Bertha. Though she had only one enemy, Claire Brewster, by the time she was thirteen she was much, much happier than the year before. Forever spending her days with Beetlejuice.
