A Soong-Type Android, the fifth of six final units constructed, and perhaps one of the most famous within the Federation. Data served Starfleet with dedication and distinction across two ships harboring the name USS Enterprise.
Originally, the android was found on a desolate world of Omicron Theta , buried after some untold catastrophic event completely annihilated the colonist civilization. The android, boasting advanced positronic technologies the likes of which Starfleet had never seen. THough, there was one major drawback. While he fully activated, this Android who's name was data had little to no information nor memory about his life on the colony, what had happened to its citizens, or anything from that matter. As a result, when the USS Tripoli happened upon the ruin and Data's body, he was in a vulnerable state while still in the beginning stages of gaining full sentience. However, this rapid development had grained considerable risks for him, as cascade failures were highly possible, which would result in a total meltdown of his positron brain. And, for a time, Data considered doing a full wipe to start over- which would in a sense wipe out his recently gained self awareness. He ultimately decided against and worked to overcome the threat. And in doing so, maintained his personality and sentience.
Eventually, Data having found inspiration from his rescuers, enlisted into Starfleet; however was met with opposition with his peers, as the Federation had already had issues prior with artificial intelligence. This did not deter the android. He presevered and was soon established onto the newly commissioned Galaxy class starship, NCC-1701 D, USS Enterprise; where he would spend the bulk of his tenure at the bridge of this flagship, under command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, respectively.
While Data was in many ways superior to average humans and most life forms within the alpha quadrant, there was something he desired above most of all. To be more human. To feel and to experience. From emotions ranging to joy and sorrow, to taste in food, and nostalgic daydreams. However his programming had its limitations and would not emulate these features in the slightest. And for years, Data would do his best to emulate them on his own, though with often hollow results. However, there was one emotion he understood fully. The desire for friendship. During his service, Data would often interact with much of the crew, namely the senior staff, and would endearingly call them his closest friends. He understood that, while most saw hims nothing more than a super advanced machine, those on the Enterprise, saw him as more than that. An equal. A member of the crew, and most of all, a friend.
