Context
The setting of Dominique’s verse takes place in a rather modern time in history, a place you won't see on the globe and definitely won't learn about in class. Mobile phones, television, and other things that we have now have all been invented but never was introduced big to the kingdom or it’s subjects. The kings that ruled adopted a way of life for both themselves and their citizens that didn't technically ban electronic devices, but simply kept the people in the dark of their existence. Visitors have only been accepted into the kingdom as the younger queen consorts often have been trying to fix their husband’s mistakes while also telling that story that is the solitary kingdom of Morena.
Over nine decades ago, the founder and first king of Morena got his citizens. A large group of people who had been trying to find a safe space ever since their's was destroyed by a rival kingdom, had fled to Morena. Pleading for the king’s compassion and allowance of their formly temporary residency, he would state to officially take them within their walls if they only were to stay inside of them. They, without hesitation, agree. Over time, word of the king's 'kindness' spread through the land, both far and wide, making those who also seeked asylum settle in the kingdom as well. With this, the first major increase in population would be established.
Once the king died his son took the throne at only fifteen. He wanted to keep both his father's story and legacy alive but unfortunately the world was changing and more and more people who weren't as welcome as others started to recognize the kingdom, wanting to have it for their own. But the new king would never let that happen. He sent out armies of men to take over, burn, and pillage every town or empire that could be found surrounding Morena in order to eliminate any immediate threats. Trhough this, he began to expand his territory untill he was twenty-five. By this time his kingdom’s territory expanded farther than triple the amount it had started as. Of course, he couldn't rule it all himself and the people started to riot.
As one would guess most conflicts would stirr in places that were taken to be part of his newly vast lands. So he sent off his two younger brothers to be lesser kings of the east and west parts of the kingdom while he stayed in the North. The high (Northern) king would make the rules while the kings of the East and West were to help enforce and improve them in their respective places. Of course, his brother's children would become royalty as well and take their father's place on the throne but that was much later, right now, the Northern king needed a wife.
The king got married less than a week after he sent off his brothers to rule the East and West. Soon after the marriage, she would become pregnant. But little did the queen know that her king had an affair with an elven girl, and she too was just as heavy with child. Once the queen gave birth to a girl the king almost immediately sent her off with the maidens of the palace who would teach her all a woman needed to know. How to cook, clean, and sew. Eventually, the queen once again gave birth to another child who was a boy. The king was overjoyed to finally have a son to take his own place.
After only a year of commitment to his first wife, the king would grow unhappy. As far as he had been concerned, she had already fulfilled her duty by having healthy children. And beyond that, she had been nothing more than a product of the place she claimed as her home. The queen had been greatly obedient, quiet, and often shied away from both politics and other concerns that might have even involved her.
The king was bored.
Feeling his reason to be justified, the king would divorce his first wife in order to now pursue the same elven woman who had caught his interest so long ago.
Having fallen head over heels with the the nature spirit, he would want to do nothing more than make her his permanent queen. After months of relentless attempts at convincing her to agree to the notion, she would then be shown with the king in public as she was slowly introduced to the nobles court.
The two would rule together and bring about a time of relative peace for another decade before both of their passings.
The very last issue he would leave with him would be his device for the plan of succession. After so many years, the only surviving children the king had left behind would be the child born from his second elven wife. Or shall I say, children… While it is true that she would ever give birth only once, she’d give the kingdom a pair of radiant twin girls. Blinded by his fondness of her, the king would never complain even once about his new lack of son. But that also never meant that he intended to give them power.
The plan had been for his most trusted to look for the oldest of the two and alert them of his death and her ascention to the throne. While Dominique would be a monarch in name and title, she would only be Morena’s offical queen once she had a husband to properly hold power. For even if her husband was a consort, he simply could not live with the thought of a female ruling his kingdom once he was gone.
