Rin witnessed her parents and brothers being savagely murdered by bandits when she was still young. This plagued her with nightmares and a general fear of humans. She was so traumatized that she lost her voice and became a mute. She never spoke to the people in the village she was raised in, so the villagers often got frustrated with her strange behavior and acted harshly. Even when the villagers would beat or scold her, Rin remained submissive and unresponsive. Her loneliness ended though the moment she met the dog yokai Sesshomaru. She started warming up to him and even began to speak after a while. Him being the first she ever trusted again.
