Once a human, however when she died before her time, she was granted the options all humans are granted. Either survive what killed her through miraculous luck or be reborn into a new life. However she had no memories of how she died, who she was or what was happening so instead she was given two new options. Fade away into nothing and experience true death or become a Grim Reaper. She made her choice and was granted her new name Azrael and became a Reaper in training.
There are three rules when it comes to being a Reaper. Rule One is that a Reaper must not reveal themselves as one to humans, this is to keep the balance of life and death, there are some exceptions to this rule, those being immortals, supernatural beings, necromancers and powerful mages. Rule two is that a Reaper must not claim a soul before the appropriate time, doing so is a breach of life and death and the offending Reaper will be wiped from existence. The Final Rule is that a Reaper cannot extend a human's life, if a human is to die, they cannot intervene whatsoever, the exception is if the human is about to die before their time.
Human Souls do not wish to die as such Reapers in Training often work in teams of two to collect a soul, the soul would fight back and possibly put the Reaper into a state of slumber otherwise. Reapers are stronger than humans by a not insignificant margin, only trainees have any danger when confronting humans.
Most, not all, Reapers are able to fade into the shadows to disappear, some can control animals and others have various forms of magic, each Reaper's abilities is determined by the phase of the moon on the night they become one.
Azrael became a Reaper on a New Moon, as such she can turn invisible, erase her presence, fade into shadows, use illusory magic, strength comparable to ten normal humans and has the ability to fly. When disguising herself as a human she goes by the name Alicia.
